This nutty glaze is perfect for topping a simple vanilla cake.

Use this old-fashioned glaze to give our Basic Vanilla Cake a lovely nutty flavor. Recipe adapted with permission from Cakes From Scratch in Half the Time, by Linda West Eckhardt (Chronicle Books, 2005).

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
  • 2 Tbsp. whole milk
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • Zest of 1 lemon

Directions

    1. Step 1Melt the butter over medium-low heat until golden brown. Whisk the sugar, salt, milk, lemon juice, and zest together. Add the melted butter in a stream while whisking until smooth. 

Tip: Careful! Butter quickly burns.

For Fluffy Butter Frosting: Increase the confectioners' sugar to 1 3/4 cups. Beat the melted butter, confectioner' sugar, salt, milk, lemon juice, and zest in a medium bowl using an electric mixer at medium-high. Beat in an additional 1/4 cup cold butter (in small pieces). Add food coloring if desired. use immediately or chill.
