Loyal Yellowstone fans are struggling to grasp one of the latest plot twists to plague the spinoff, Dutton Ranch. As stellar as the season 1 storyline is, people all over social media are besmirched by the idea that it didn’t land a single Emmy nomination. But before you go all up in arms like Rip and the gang, there are some things you should know.
Why Was Dutton Ranch Not Nominated for Any Emmy Awards?
The lack of nominations surrounding Dutton Ranch has nothing to do with the Yellowstone spinoff’s storyline and everything to do with the Emmy Award eligibility timeline. According to the Television Academy Emmy Awards rulebook, a series had to air six episodes nationally by May 31 to be eligible for the 2026 Emmy Awards.
Dutton Ranch premiered on May 15, gifting fans the first two episodes of the explosive series. By the time May 31 rolled around, only four episodes had aired. Which is to say, 2027 could very well be the year that Dutton Ranch receives its flowers.
As wonderful as it would be for Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and the entire Dutton Ranch cast and crew to earn recognition for their captivating delivery, it’s important to remember that not all great shows get awarded. After all, Yellowstone earned a special place in fans' hearts over seven years and five seasons, but it only received a single Emmy nod in all that time. In 2021, it was up for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program, but it didn’t nab the trophy. Meanwhile, 1923 was nominated for two Emmys in 2025—Outstanding Production Design and Outstanding Period Costumes—but also didn’t score big during the ceremony.
At the end of the day, nominations or not, there’s no denying that the Yellowstone universe—and Taylor Sheridan’s storytelling as a whole—has entertained the masses for much of the last decade. Millions of followers and record-breaking views? That’s nothing to shake a stick at.
