The best garden sets worth snapping up before summer arrives – including a 3-seater under £350

Outdoor sofa sets for a ready-made garden retreat

A garden set is, in effect, a ready-made outdoor living room, usually including a two or three-seater sofa, a matching armchair and a coffee table. And whilst we would hardly recommend a fully matching set of furniture indoors, it is a perfect solution outdoors.

Choosing the right one for your garden is a balance of size, material, configuration and maintenance demands – the British climate is unforgiving enough that a set bought purely for looks alone is unlikely to last a full calendar year. It also depends as much on how you use your garden – whether you entertain regularly, or whether you simply need a quiet spot for two.

Ahead is a selection of the best garden sofa sets available now, spanning a wide range of budgets and styles, with handy categories (best budget buy, best modular design and so on), to help you make the right decision.

What is the best material for outdoor garden furniture?

The most durable outdoor furniture materials are wood and powder-coated aluminium. Teak is the premium choice – it's naturally resistant to rot, insects and moisture, and can be left outside year-round without significant deterioration. Acacia too is a widely used mid-range hardwood that performs well outdoors provided it is oiled annually.

Aluminium is lighter, rust-proof and low-maintenance, making it well-suited to those who want a permanent fixture without seasonal upkeep. Synthetic materials – often a plastic faux rattan – are the most affordable and handle rain well, but better-quality weaves are worth seeking out as cheaper versions can become brittle over time.

How do I clean garden sofa cushions?

Most outdoor cushion covers can be removed and machine-washed on a cool cycle. For cushions that cannot be removed, a solution of mild washing-up liquid and warm water, applied with a soft brush and rinsed thoroughly, will deal with most surface dirt and mildew. Avoid bleach-based cleaners on coloured fabrics as they will accelerate fading. Allow cushions to dry fully in the open air before replacing or storing – damp cushions stored in a bag or box are the most common cause of mould.

The classic Porthallow set from Garden Trading includes a two-seater sofa, two generous armchairs and a matching coffee table, each with a sturdy but simple slatted frame. The natural acacia wood will weather to a pleasing silver-grey if left untreated, though oiling annually will preserve its warm honey tone. Discreet covers are available to protect your set during harsher winter months.

A well-priced set from John Lewis (just £999 for all four pieces), with a sage green and ticking combo that wouldn't feel out of place in an English rose garden. The curved legs and scrolled arms only add to its character.

Powder-coated aluminium is the sensible choice for a permanent fixture – it won't rust, won't need oiling and can be left out through the year.

Roma 5-Seater Corner Lounge Set

Roma 5-Seater Corner Lounge Set

This 5-seater acacia corner sofa complete with matching coffee table is from the ever reliable Dusk. The rope weave detailing feels lighter and more modern than solid wood, and its cushion back is designed for sink-in comfort.

The Olefin upholstery is a practical homeowner's best friend – the material is solution-dyed rather than surface-printed, to resist fading. Its L-shaped configuration seats five comfortably and suits a corner of a terrace or walled garden where a conventional sofa plus chairs arrangement might feel either cramped.

The luxury pick

Cintre Sofa in Natural Teak

The carved wavy back is reason enough to love this garden sofa from OKA – it references the sinuous timber fretwork of classic Lutyens garden furniture. Solid teak is the gold standard for outdoor hardwood – left untreated it silvers gracefully, oiled it stays honey-warm, and either way it will outlast most things around it.

At £2,771 for the sofa alone, this is unambiguously a long-term investment, and the matching armchair and coffee table are sold separately.

The angled legs and sloped arms give this La Redoute set a mid-century character that stands apart from the more conventional slatted-back garden furniture at this price. The woven rope backrests – visible on the reverse of the chairs – add a layer of texture without complicating the overall line.

Acacia in this pale, limed finish will suit gardens where the planting leans towards silvery or grey-green tones, and it works particularly well against pale stone walls.

The real selling point of Habitat's corner sofa and coffee table set is its modularity – sections can be reconfigured as needed, which makes it unusually adaptable.

The oak-stained Acacia has a clean, Scandinavian character that suits informal garden settings, and the built-in end platforms are a handy addition. Worth noting that at this price point annual treatment with a wood oil will significantly extend the life of the frame.

There is nothing more quintessentially English than red and white ticking, which evokes images of summer fêtes and strawberries and cream. The spindle backrest and peg detailing on this classic garden sofa from Rowen & Wren give it a heritage quality, and its FSC-certified solid teak frame will only improve with age.

The three-seater is priced at £1,998, with a matching two-seater and armchair sold separately, which makes it an investment buy for many summers to come.

Green Boucle 5-Seater Garden Sofa Set

The radiating rope detailing on the arms and back is the defining feature of Next's 5-seater garden sofa set. The fan-shaped weave gives the set a sculptural quality that belies its price tag.

The boucle upholstery is an interesting material choice – the looped texture reads as an indoor fabric, far more inviting than standard outdoor flat-weave, though it will need more careful drying after rain.
