Comic Relief has launched its first ever 100% plastic-free, plant-based Red Nose for Red Nose Day 2021.

The new noses – which have taken over 18 months to develop — are made from bagasse, a natural sustainable by-product of sugarcane. Instead of existing for hundreds of years as plastic waste, these noses will naturally biodegrade.

In keeping with the eco theme, the 2021 red noses come in the form of 10 wildlife characters, including a squirrel, ladybird, fox, owl and badger. Eco-friendly and adorable, this year's noses are a great way to help raise money for the charity.

Where can you buy a Comic Relief plastic-free Red Nose for 2021?

All the 2021 Comic Relief merchandise, including red noses, t-shirts, games and accessories are available to buy via the online shop. Red Noses are also available at participating Sainsbury's and Argos stores. For ease, we've popped a couple of highlights here, too:

Back in 2019, Comic Relief and Sainsbury's began researching more sustainable materials after hundreds of school children asked them to create plastic-free noses to help the environment — and it seems their petitioning has paid off.

"I'm extremely pleased that we have created the first plastic-free nose for Red Nose Day 2021 – it is amazing what you can create from a sugar cane product," Richard Curtis, Comic Relief co-founder, says.

What to Read Next

"Our new Nose marks a strong step on our sustainability journey. We are committed to designing a more sustainable Nose every year, while continuing to make them attractive and fun, and recognise we still have a lot of work to do in creating the perfect model."

Tony Bosworth, plastics campaigner at Friends of the Earth, added: "Everyone knows how extensive plastic pollution is and what it does to wildlife so it's good that the famous Comic Relief nose will be plastic free. We need alternative and better solutions to avoid single-use plastic everywhere and this should be led by industry and government. We look forward to Comic Relief making sure that all of its materials are environmentally friendly."

When is Red Nose day 2021?

Red Nose Day is back on Friday 19th March 2021. It will start at 7pm and continue to 10pm. We can expect celebrities including Sir Lenny Henry, Olivia Colman, David Tennant and Keira Knightley doing their bit to raise money for a number of essential charities, including the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, Make Poverty History and Covid-19 emergency support measures.

The evening's entertainment will come in the form of comedy, music and live performances.
