BBC Alba's new four-part TV series will follow the adventures of a "real life" mermaid on the beautiful island of Lewis, Scotland.

The series, titled Miann na Maighdinn-mara/Mermaid Tales, will follow Kate Macleod as she swims in some of the deepest parts of the surrounding turquoise waters in her home district of Uig.

From the beautiful island of Little Bernera where she kayaks with seals, to testing out a speedboat, each episode will see Kate tell viewers about her lifelong passion of swimming. Not afraid of diving in freezing temperatures, Kate shows us how to swim as she wears her giant mermaid-like monofin flipper.

Speaking about her love of water, Kate told Press and Journal: "I have such a strong bond with the sea and Uig. I think a lot of islanders feel the same. There's something so special about the islands and Scotland as a whole. I feel so privileged to live in this part of the world, at the edge of the sea, and in the water. When I was young, I felt that if our sea was warmer I would never leave it, I'd just be a mermaid for the rest of my life."

Executive producer, Seumas Mactaggart of MacTV, adds: "Mermaid Tales is filmed from the perspective of a young woman who has a strong interest in the natural environment and who is extremely proud of her maritime heritage. It is truly escapist, and such a tonic in these difficult times."

Episode one will see Kate kayak with seals on the island of Little Bernera, while episode two will follow her as she witnesses a pod of dolphins in Loch Roag. Other highlights to look forward to in the series include Kate testing out a speedboat, learning about a 19th century shipwreck and conquering her fear of deep water. Make sure not to miss this.

Miann na Maighdinn-mara/Mermaid Tales begins on BBC Alba on Tuesday 16th March at 8.30pm. You can catch up on BBC iPlayer.
