Trooping of the Colour brings together 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians each June in a great display of military precision to mark the Sovereign's official birthday. This year, it falls on Saturday 15th June.

The ancient ceremony, which has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for over 260 years, represents the Army's allegiance to the Monarch and their country through pageantry. The King's actual birthday is on 14th November, but Trooping of the Colour is the official birthday parade.

What happens during Trooping the Colour?

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles will participate in Trooping the Colour 2024, but will ride in a carriage rather than on horseback.

According to reports, The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, won't attend the dress rehearsal on 8th June. It is not known whether she will appear at the event on Saturday 15th June.

Once His Majesty has arrived at the Horse Guard's Parade in Whitehall, he is greeted by a royal salute and then carries out an inspection of the troops.

Then, the military bands will perform and the escorted Regimental Colour, or flag, is processed down the ranks of soldiers. Once the Foot Guards have marched past The King, he will then journey back to Buckingham Palace at the head of the soldiers. His Majesty will be joined by other royal family members on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to watch a fly-past by the Royal Air Force.

There will also be a 41-gun salute in Green Park to mark the occasion.
