With its dramatic cliffs and rocky coastlines – not to mention the iconic Durdle Door – the Jurassic Coast, which stretches from East Devon to Dorset, is one of the most sought-after beaches in the UK.

But if you’re looking to escape the crowds, a lesser-known village sandwiched between two tourist hotspots in Devon is often overlooked by visitors.

Sitting between Sidmouth and Lyme Regis lies Seaton – a small town with a mighty beach and an even bigger community spirit, according to locals.

Victoria Moorey, who works at Coastal Craft Collective near the seafront, told The Express: "People bypass us because they don't know that we're even here.

"Sidmouth's on the map, Lyme's on the map and nobody knows about little Seaton in the middle. It is a hidden gem. We're all independent businesses, we've got so much that goes on.

"We get accused of being a tiny town but that's the thing, we are a small town with a huge beach, a great community and a big heart."

Things to do in Seaton

The slightly sloped pebbled shore – stretching for over a mile – attracts all kinds of beach dwellers from sunbathers and ramblers to kayakers and paddle boarders, while the surrounding countryside is home to Seaton Wetlands Nature Reserve and the popular Seaton Tramway.

Hikers can also follow the South West Coast Path, to the south of Seaton, to enjoy stunning views back across Seaton beach and the town from the hilltops that line the coast.

Likewise, the pedestrianised town centre is packed of independent shops and cafes boasting beautiful Victorian and Edwardian architecture – which are open all year round, unlike many other seaside towns.

Victoria adds: "It's a working town with visitors. It's nice and quiet but gets busier in the summer. We're not a town that closes down. We stay open all year round. We're not subject to loads of second homeowners like a lot of Devon towns are so it stays the same all year round."
