Staffordshire Bull Terriers and West Highland White Terriers have been revealed as the most affectionate and communicative dog breeds, a new study by EUKANUBA has revealed – so look out for these friendly breeds at the rescue centre.

Staffies, who are known as the 'waggiest' of breeds, show affection by enjoying a belly rub from their owners, while Westies demonstrate their love through licking, jumping and pawing. Other affectionate breeds to consider adopting include Corgis, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Labradors, who also want regular cuddles with their owners.

Most affectionate dog breeds:

  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • West Highland White Terrier
  • Corgi
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  • Labrador

The research also found that 39% of Westies and 37% of Staffies share their owners bed.

"Though every dog is different, every single one wants to be loved, and when they are, they will return that love ten-fold. They can show affection in so many more ways than the obvious tail wagging and licking our faces," Karen Wild, dog behaviourist explains.

"Many dogs tilt their heads when they’re keen and can show their bond with us by resting their head on our knee or seeking us for a sofa snuggle. It’s important to understand how your dog shows affection so you can return it for a loving and happy partnership – there really is no relationship like it!"

The study also found that 56% of owners have revealed that their dogs prefer hearing a female voice. While dogs might be known as a man's best friend, the study shows that most pups warm to the voice of a female.
