One woman has shared a genius trick to prepare your dog for the arrival of a younger pet sibling – and all you need is a stuffed toy.

Rachel Givens and Collin Hughes wanted to add another four-legged friend to their family but were worried about how their current pooch, Shug, might respond.

To prepare their bulldog for the new arrival, they gave Shug a stuffed toy with the same name as the new puppy for a period of six weeks (the toy also looked the same as the new sibling, too). During this time, Rachel started a name association with the toy, asking Shug to fetch it from around the home.

In the viral video, which now has over 17 million views, we see Shug playing with the small stuffed toy, getting excited each time he sees it. Eventually, we see Shug meet his real brother, Bruce, and immediately make a connection.

Many viewers commented on the video, explaining how clever the unique initiative is. One said: "I have never seen such a unique and effective way of introducing a new dog," while another said: "I'm going to try this when we get our next puppy."
