Can you give dogs ice cubes during a heatwave? With temperatures rising across the UK, vets have addressed the viral social media posts claiming it can be dangerous for pups.

There is some confusion around whether it's OK to give a dog ice cubes when the weather warms up, however ice cubes can be used to help dogs cool down.

While some believe cubes can cause bloating, small chunks of ice are perfect for pups to enjoy on a hot day.

"Ice is just frozen water it is absolutely fine for your dog to have small ice cubes. They are a good way of helping your dog moderate its temperature during the warmer months. You can also add ice cubes to their water to help keep it cool when it gets hot," Dr Scott, vet at Barking Heads, tells Country Living.

"If you want to make them tastier for your dog, you can add some wet food to the ice cube but make sure you're not feeding them excessively if you opt to add wet food to their ice cubes."

One thing owners should be aware of, however, is giving your dog ice cubes if they are showing signs of heatstroke. As well as this, always ensure they are an appropriate size for your dog, as large ice cube as they can pose a choking risk.

The only significant risks we can see from your dog eating ice is from possible damage to the teeth because of chewing on hard ice but the risk of that is low. Remember: if your pet is showing any signs of heatstroke, you should avoid ice altogether.

Also, with temperatures soaring, it's important to adopt the 7 second-rule, to see if it's safe to walk your dog during a heatwave.
