Balmy summer evenings might be behind us, but new research has discovered that Brits are looking to transform dormant winter gardens into beautiful entertaining spaces as the temperatures tumble — even if it means layering up with an extra blanket or two.

In order to determine which autumn and winter garden accessories are the most popular, the team at DIYs analysed search volume data on Amazon, using search analytics tool Ahrefs to find out what key words are trending.

Taking the top spot is twinkling string lights, with an average of 115,000 global monthly searches. From on-trend festoon bulb lights to beautiful lanterns, garden lights are perfect for decorating, wrapping and illuminating the furthest reaches of your outdoor space.

Stefan Gheorghe from Diys.com adds: "Good lighting encourages us to spend more time enjoying the natural environment and in turn has the potential to increase serotonin levels. It comes as no surprise that outdoor lighting is a priority for many as it enables people to stay outside for longer as the evenings draw in."

Elsewhere, other trending accessories also include blankets (59,000), cushions (40,000) and bird baths (51,000) as households turn their attention towards helping garden visitors this winter.

"At this time of year, sources of water become scarce for birds as many freeze over," adds Stefan. "Bird baths provide a solution to this issue as birds are able to bathe in clean water and keep their feathers in good condition which is vital for them to keep warm."
