As we turn our attention to spring cleaning, it’s not just cupboards and carpets that could do with a refresh – your mattress deserves a little care, too.

And it seems many of us are already thinking along those lines, with searches for “mattress cleaning services near me” up 70% this week, according to data from Google Trends.

But while calling in the professionals can help, a few simple habits at home can go a long way in keeping your mattress fresh, supportive and hygienic.

Michal Szlas, founder of mattress specialists OTTY Sleep, shares the key steps to follow this spring.

Rotate your mattress

“Over time, mattresses can develop indentations where your body lies most often,” explains Michal. “While this is completely normal, rotating your mattress helps distribute weight more evenly, reduces sagging and extends its lifespan.”

He recommends rotating your mattress once a month during the first year, then every three months thereafter.

“Unless your mattress is double-sided, rotate it 180 degrees so the head becomes the foot,” he adds. “If you have a double-sided mattress, you can flip it and follow the same process.”

Let it breathe

Spring is the ideal time to give your mattress a chance to air out.

“Strip it back and allow it to breathe for a few hours by opening windows and letting fresh air circulate,” says Michal. “This helps to reduce trapped moisture and odours.”

He advises avoiding prolonged direct sunlight, but says a few hours in a well-ventilated room can make a noticeable difference.

“Using a slatted base can also help improve airflow underneath the mattress, reducing the likelihood of mould or mildew caused by moisture retention.”

Tackle sagging

If your mattress is starting to dip, it doesn’t necessarily mean it needs replacing just yet.

“A sagging mattress doesn’t always mean it’s beyond saving,” says Michal. “By identifying and correcting issues early, you can delay the need for a replacement and maintain comfort.”

He suggests using a supportive mattress topper, checking the condition of your bed base and rotating the mattress more frequently to help restore support.

It’s a step that’s often overlooked, but regular cleaning can make a big difference.

“Vacuuming your mattress helps remove dust, skin cells and allergens that build up over time,” says Michal. “Use a handheld vacuum or an upholstery attachment for gentle but effective cleaning.”

For stains, he recommends using a mild detergent and water solution applied with a clean cloth, taking care not to soak the surface.

“Moisture can lead to mould growth, so it’s important to keep things as dry as possible,” he adds. “If your mattress has a removable cover, washing it monthly can also help keep things fresh.”

Invest in a mattress protector

A mattress protector is one of the simplest ways to keep your bed in good condition.

“A good mattress protector is your first line of defence against spills, dust and allergens,” says Michal. “It’s much easier to wash a protector than to deep clean a mattress.”

He recommends choosing one that is breathable, waterproof, and machine-washable, and refreshing it regularly.

“Changing or washing your protector with the seasons is a simple step that can make a big impact,” he adds.

Taking a little time to care for your mattress now can not only help extend its lifespan but also create a cleaner, more comfortable sleep environment.

And with a few simple steps, it’s a spring clean that doesn’t take nearly as long as you might think.
