The Royal family has shared an adorable black and white photo of the Queen as a toddler in 1928 to mark her 96th birthday.
Writing on Instagram, the caption said: "Happy Birthday Your Majesty! Today as The Queen turns 96, we're sharing this photograph taken when she was 2-years-old.
"Then Princess Elizabeth, she was the eldest daughter of The Duke and Duchess of York and was never expected to become Queen. Her life changed in 1936 when her uncle, King Edward VIII abdicated, her father became King George VI and the young Princess became the heir presumptive.
"Following the sad death of her father in 1952, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II aged just 25, and this year is celebrating 70 years on the throne - a first in British history."
The post comes after an image of the Queen standing in between her two fell ponies, Bybeck Katie and Bybeck Nightingale, was also shared by the Royal family. Taken last month in the grounds of Windsor Castle, the image is the fourth in a series of photos released by the Royal Windsor Horse Show, following images that celebrated the Golden Jubilee, the Platinum Jubilee and Her Majesty's 90th Birthday.
While the Queen is turning 96 today (Thursday 21st April), her bigger birthday celebrations won't begin until June with the annual Trooping of Colour parade. As part of a long-standing tradition that dates back to the reign of King George II, Her Majesty celebrates two birthdays just in case the weather in April is bad.
The ancient ceremony, which has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for over 260 years, will bring together 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians, as well as a fly-past by the Royal Air Force. This year, it falls on Thursday 2nd June ahead of her Platinum Jubilee weekend.
