Are shops open on Easter Sunday? A very good question. Depending on your location, the retailer and the size of the store, the answer is different.

Important dates: In 2026, Easter Sunday falls on April 5th, Good Friday is April 3rd and Easter Monday is April 6th.

Are UK shops open on Easter Sunday?

Despite Good Friday and Easter Monday being bank holidays, plenty of shops decide to stay open. However, on Easter Sunday, stores being open depends largely (and legally) on their size.

This is because government rules dictate that stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland over 280 square metres in size are legally obliged to close on Easter Sunday. Whilst this doesn't apply to Scotland, some retailers choose to close for the day anyway.

In practice, this means most large supermarkets will be closed, while smaller convenience shops can open if they choose. Many smaller shops still close for the day to give staff a break.

If you need to head to the shop on Easter Sunday, check the retailer's website for opening dates and times. Some shops and supermarkets may be open but with reduced hours and earlier/later opening times.
